Now booking for the 2020 season.

Welcome to the Captain Morse House

Martha’s Vineyard’s largest and most elegant vacation rental home. The Captain Morse House was built by Whaling Captain John Morse in 1840. The home has been fully renovated and has all of the modern amenities you are accustomed to while preserving its historic grandeur. Featuring 26 rooms with 12 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, 2 kitchens and 2 dining rooms, 25 people sleep comfortably here. Either of the 2 large front porches facing Edgartown harbor makes an ideal place to spend the afternoon. The over-sized backyard and garden are well-suited for hosting weddings and events. Plan your week or month long vacation to remember today by visiting our reservations page.

Accommodations

This is a large and magnificent home.  The full home is usually rented out but can also be split into the front and back half due to two complete kitchens. The full home has 26 rooms, 12 bedrooms, 7 full baths and four separate gracious outdoor seating areas. There is even an elevator for handicap access.

A Truly Historic House

A beautiful part of the town’s history, the Captain Morse House was built in 1845. Prior to the discovery of petroleum, ships were sent to hunt whales for their oil and blubber. Captain John Morse made this his profession from 1829 – 1851.

A Unique Rental Experience

The best of both worlds, a historic property updated with all of the modern comforts. Be close to the action but far enough away that you can sleep soundly at night. The island hosts many great vacation activities but is known for it’s fishing, golf, bicycling, sailing and superbly relaxing beach days. The Captain Morse House provides plenty of space for relaxation and entertaining. Bringing families together has become a specialty.

For Memorable Events

We allow just a few special events each year for guests staying at the house. We have hosted Weddings, Corporate Retreats, Vow Renewals, Celebrations of Life and, our specialty, Far Flung Family Reunions. Now is always the right time to plan for your far off event by booking the house and discussing your event.

Beautiful, unique and spacious! One of the most interesting houses, I’ve ever had the pleasure to stay in. Charming and old with lots of character, but modernized in the places that needed to be. Trip of a lifetime with some amazing women, and this house just made it that more special and fun!

VRBO Review, May, 2019

Our visit to the Captain Morse House was amazing and we didn’t want to leave. The Captain Morse House is a large, beautiful mansion that accommodated our family of 19 perfectly. It is elegant and yet comfortable and each of us found a favorite room to relax in. Shops and restaurants were within walking distance along with the beach.

We can’t wait to go back, we loved it that much.

Fantastic experience!
The Captain Morse House is a beautiful, historic home that couldn’t be more conveniently located to downtown Edgartown and the Lighthouse beach. The house has tons of character and lots of rooms to accommodate a large group. Beautiful yard with room for kids to play. Can’t wait to return!

Manager

I grew up in the Captain Morse House with my parents and brother. Over the years I’ve made many updates to the rental home for the comfort of our guests while maintaining its history. We had a wonderful childhood full of sailing, fishing, tennis, and bike riding on Martha’s Vineyard. Our family has been coming to the Vineyard since 1955 and can assist the first time or seasoned Vineyard traveler. If you’d like to make a reservation or have any questions, please reach out to me directly via the form above.

Yours Sincerely,

Platt
